국문 초록

2000년대 초부터 대학의 교양교육 과정이 대대적으로 개편되면서 학교마다 교양교육의 목표를 다양하게 제시하고 있다. 이 목표의 내용을 살펴보면 결국 지적 능력(지성)과 인성의 함양으로 수렴되는데, 본 연구는 이 두 측면이 교육의 최종목표가 아니라 우리가 행복하게 살기 위해 필요한 선결조건이라 생각한다. 그래서 행복이 마땅히 그 자리를 차지해야 하고 행복의 정의와 조건에 대한 여러 논의에서 고대 그리스 철학, 특히 아리스토텔레스로부터 기원하는 ‘행복’(eudaimonia) 개념이 교양교육 이념으로서 최종의 교육목표에 가장 부합하다는 것을 입증하려고 한다. 이에 본 연구에서 먼저 기존의 교양교육의 목표를 검토하고 지성과 인성과 관련하여 교양교육의 기원이라 할 수 있는 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 입장을 살펴본다. 그 다음에 교양교육 역사에서 ‘교양’(Bildung) 개념의 성립과 관련, 자연스럽게 접목하는 ‘인문학’과의 관계를 규명하고 인문학의 어원인 ‘인간다움’(humanitas) 이 ‘다른 사람과 함께 잘 삶’을 전제하고 있어 결국 교양교육의 목표는 ‘행복’이라는 것을 밝히려고 한다.

영문 초록

Since the early 2000s, liberal education curricula at universities have undergone significant reforms, with each institution presenting diverse objectives for liberal education. Upon examining these objectives, they ultimately converge on the cultivation of intellectual ability (intellect) and character. However, this study posits that these two aspects are not the ultimate goals of education but rather prerequisites necessary for living a happy life. Therefore, happiness should rightfully take precedence as the primary objective, and among various discussions on the definition and conditions of happiness, the concept of eudaimonia, originating from ancient Greek philosophy—particularly Aristotle—best aligns with the final educational goal of liberal education. To substantiate this argument, this study first reviews the existing objectives of liberal education and explores the perspectives of Plato and Aristotle, who can be regarded as the intellectual foundations of liberal education, particularly concerning intellect and character. Next, it examines the historical development of the concept of Bildung in liberal education and its natural connection to the humanities. Given that the etymology of the humanities (humanitas) presupposes “living well together with others,” this study ultimately aims to demonstrate that the true goal of liberal education is happiness.
