국문 초록

프리엘의 『번역』에는 영국이 아일랜드를 식민화하는 과정에서 지도를 제작하면서 언어를 대체하려는 사건을 배경으로 다양한 인물들이 이름붙이기에 대해 반응하는 것이 표현되고 있다. 언어가 정체성을 확정하는 도구라는 전제를 바탕으로 이름이 가지는 문화적, 역사적 의미를 분석하였다.

영문 초록

In Brian Friel’s Translations the issues of identity confusion surface in the process of colonization. Friel presents the changes in language and culture through the villagers’ varied attitudes to their language. A name gives each object an distinct identity. Therefore, this article focuses on naming to study the recognition of identity, the various effects of naming on culture and history as well as individual identity, and the situation in Ireland—the relations between Ireland and England, ethnicity driven by colonization, conflicts between generations.
