국문 초록

예이츠의 후기시(1920-1939)를 탈식민주의 입장에서 보려고 한다. 1920년대 그의 시적 성향은 그 동안에 잠복되어 있던 영국에 대한 저항정신이 되살아나지만, 만년으로 접어든 1930년 이후에 발표된 “동양시편”에서 영국에 대해 새로운 전기를 맞는다. 이들 “동양시편”에 재현된 시적 표현에서 예이츠는 “상상의 동양”을 식민주의자나 피식민지인의 도피의 공간으로 보지 않는다. 오히려 그는 영국에서 받은 유산과 아일랜드인으로서의 정신적인 분열에 마침내 마침표를 찍고, 화해를 암시하면서 극복과정의 일환으로 제3의 공간을 “차분한 대안”으로 제시한다.

영문 초록

This essay aims to illustrate the resistance and a third space as represented in W. B. Yeats’s later poems (1920-1939). In the period, some of his poems represent the obvious resistance against England. His poetic depiction of his imagined East reaches a turning point especially in the poems during the 1930s. In these poems, Yeats reaches the climax in his creation of a third space, but here the space is described in terms of neither colonized nor colonizer but a quiescent alternative, perhaps indicating Yeats’s eventual reconciliation of his imperial legacy and split psyche. Consequently, his later poetic expression turned resistance into reconciliation, searching for a new alternative. As he approached his death in 1939, his resistance against England, being gradually alleviated, morphed into a new phase.
