국문 초록

예이츠는 정신을 물질보다 더 중시했지만 물질을 배격하지 않은 신비주의자이다. 또 20세기의 마지막 낭만주의자로 자처한 예이츠는 꿈을 진리로 간주하며 꿈을 소중하게 여겨왔다. 그는 꿈을 통해서 피상적이고 단편적인 인간에게는 보이지 않는 진리를 볼 수 있다고 믿었던 시인이다. 세상을 올바르게 이해하는 길은 얄팍한 과학지식보다는 정신을 대변하는 꿈과 초월을 통해서이다. 논자는 예이츠 시에 나타난 꿈의 여러 형태들 중에서 상상력, 계시에 초점을 맞추어 읽어볼 것이다. 예이츠 시에 나타난 꿈은 단일한 의미가 아니라 맥락에 따라 다양한 의미로 나타난다.

영문 초록

This essay aims at understanding the meaning of dreams in W. B. Yeats’s poems. He was a neo-Platonist who put the spiritual over the material, and didn’t make light of it completely. As one of the “last romantics,” he considered dreams invaluable, as they enabled him to see the things invisible to a fragmental man. In other words, the way to understand the world truly is not through mere scientific knowledge but through dreams, or transcendence. In his poems a dream has neither a fixed nor a single valency: it depends on a situation. This essay will study how a dream works on his poetic imagination in some of his poetry.
