국문 초록

본인의 주제는, 제목으로 미루어, 큰 주제가 될 것이다. 즉, 예이츠의 인생의 전체가 될 수 있다. 본인은 예이츠의 가까운 친구며 시인, 예술가인 스터즈 무어와 6년간 주고받은 일단의 황홀한 서신들을 논의하고자 한다. 예이츠의 철학은 그의 많은 시와 자서전 속의 많은 친구들의 큰 특징을 설명한다. 그런데, 셰익스피어처럼, 기존의 사회적 관습과 도덕적 판단이 전적으로 배제되고, 있는 그대로의 인간성을 받아들인다는 느낌이 있다. 그는, (영혼에 대해서) 라오넬 존슨 혹은 도슨 혹은 와일드에 대해 말할 것 같은 것은 말하지 않는데, “아깝도다! 그 배우들은 ‘혼’일 뿐이야, 결국 ‘허공, 빈 허공으로’ 사라지겠지”라고는 결고 말하지 않는다. 혼히 한정된 형식으로나마 스스로 나타난다는 것은 경이롭기도 하거니와 우스꽝스럽고, 그것이 이윽고 사라지는 것은 비극적이다. “인간은 사랑에 빠지며 사라지는 것을 사랑하리,/ 더 이상 무슨 말을 하리.”

영문 초록

My subject could, with the title I have chosen, be a large one: it could be the subject of Yeats’s whole view of life…. I want to discuss mainly the series of fascinating letters which Yeats exchanged, over a period of six years, with his close friend, the poet and artist, Sturge Moore. Yeats’s philosophy explains one great quality of many of his poems and of the portraits of his friends in the “Autobiographies.” These portraits seem timeless; and there is a sense in which Yeats, like Shakespeare, accepts human nature for what it is, with reverence and wonder — with a total absence of conventional social or moral criticism. He never, as he might about Lionel Johnson or Dowson or Wilde, says: “What a waste!” His actors are “all spirits” and by and by they will vanish into “air, into thin air.” That spirit should manifest itself at all in limited forms is both wonderful and comic; it is tragic that its manifestations should vanish: “Man is in love and loves what vanishes,/ What more is there to say?”
