국문 초록
Purpose - This study analyzes the relationship between trade openness and CO2 emissions in 58 low-income countries from 1990 to 2020.
Design/Methodology/Approach - To examine the relationship, this study investigates the nexus between trade dependence and CO2 emissions using a panel model, panel feasible generalized least square (FGSL), and a panel Granger causality test.
Findings - For the entire group of low-income countries, trade dependence did not have a significant effect on CO2 emissions. However, in some low-income countries, increased export dependence led to a rise in CO2 emissions, resulting in a negative production effect. Additionally, low- and lower-middle-income countries experienced a decrease in CO2 emissions due to increased import dependence. The panel Granger causality results indicate that trade dependence, export dependence, and import dependence in low-income countries all have a Granger causal relationship with CO2 emissions.
Research Implications - While many developed countries are actively addressing climate change through carbon neutrality initiatives, low-income countries face challenges in benefiting from trade liberalization due to limited industrial bases and economic infrastructures. Therefore, cooperation from developed countries is essential to help low-income countries share in the benefits of economic growth and trade, which can be achieved through increased trade activity. However, due to the limitations of the data, the analysis period in this study was set until 2020, meaning that external shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic went unaccounted.
