국문 초록

이 논문에서는 셰이머스 히니의 시를 바흐찐의 언어관과 대화주의의 시각으로 읽어보려 한다. 탈식민주의 시인으로서 히니는 지시대상과 기호 간의 분열과 자의성을 인지하지 않을 수 없는 조건이었고, 주어진 외부의 언어인 영어로 자신의 경험과 사회를 재현하기에는 이질적이고 충분치 않았다. 이몬 휴즈의 언급대로 상호텍스성과 상호대화성은 이러한 문제를 해결하기에 적합하다고 볼 수 있다. 히니와 바흐찐에게 자아와 주체는 닫혀있거나 텍스트에서 권위적으로 모든 언술들을 다 통합하거나 통제하는 것이 아니라, 타자들의 언술과 다양한 상호작용을 하면서 새롭게 자아를 형성해가는 과정이었다. 그리고 이러한 상호대화와 역동적 과정에서 히니 시의 개성적인 스타일이 성취되었다고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to read Seamus Heaney’s poems from the Bakhtinian view of language and dialogism. Heaney the postcolonial poet was keenly conscious of the split or arbitrariness between the referent and its sign. To represent his experience and society, the language imposed from England was foreign and not enough, so, as Eamon Hughes said, one of his solution was intertextuality or dialogic imagination. For Heaney and Bakhtin as well, one’s self or subject is neither closed nor unifies all the utterances from above in the text. Rather it is always in the process of constitution through the continuous interaction with others’ utterances and speeches. In the very dialogic and dynamic process Heaney achieves his own idiosyncratic style.
