국문 초록

본 논문은 이른바 예이츠의 정치적 작품의 성격을 규명하고 한다. 통상 정치적이라고 해석되는 예이츠의 시 몇 편과 희곡 한 작품을 읽으면서 정말 그런 지 검토하고자 한다. 그러나 사실 예이츠는 일부 비평가들이 정치 시, 정치 극이라는 작품을 그렇게 여기지 않은 것 같다. 필자는 이 작품들이 정치적이지도 비정치적이지도 않으며, 그의 사상과 철학체계의 일부분으로 여겨져야 하고 또한 전작품의 구조에 한 부분으로 보아야 한다고 주장한다. 이러한 접근이 받아들여지면, 그의 복잡한 작품세계와 더욱이 많은 평론가들에게 이해하기 어려운 복잡한 작가 예이츠를 보다 온전하게 이해할 수 있게 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to redefine the nature of some so-called political pieces, by reading a few poems and a play by Yeats. Some critics classify them as “political pieces” when Yeats may have intended them to be otherwise. The paper claims that they are neither political nor non-political: they form part of a bigger system, part of the whole structure of his work. If we read the pieces this way, we could better understand the complex work of Yeats and the complex Yeats who has baffled so many critics and literary historians. It will raise basic questions as to the validity of such claims and make attempts to answer them more clearly than not by putting those pieces in the context of his whole work and its system.
