국문 초록
The purpose of this study is two-fold. One is to explore elementary school students’ experience of learning English vocabulary and grammar to identify problems that cause underachievement in English. The other is to support programs for underachievers in English at elementary school. A qualitative research method was employed for this research, and in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6th grade elementary school underachievers. Ten problems were identified as causes of the underachievement in vocabulary and grammar learning. Each interview was recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to find effective ways to solve such problems. It was found that underachievers need support programs that can help them understand grammar on the one hand, and internalize the vocabulary they learn on the other. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that ChatGPT has positive impacts on students’ English achievement and affective domains such as confidence, interest and anxiety in English learning. It is shown that AI relieved the anxiety of the underachievers and gave them confidence by providing them with options when faced with difficulties in class. The results of this study are expected to foster teachers’ deeper understanding when applying digital tools in the elementary school context.
