본 연구는 리처드 백스터(Richard Baxter, 1615-1691)와 조지 폭스(George Fox, 1624-1691) 사이의 성령과 성경의 관계에 대한 논쟁을 분석한다. 이 논쟁은 당시 개신교 정통주의와 퀘이커교 사이의 중요한 신학적 대립을 보여 준다. 연구는 폭스의『위대한 신비』(The Great Mystery)를 중심으로 양측의 주요 논쟁점들을 분석하고, 각자의 신학적 입장이 근거한 토대를 고찰한다. 두 신학자 사이의 견해 차이는 단순한 교리적 해석의 차이를 넘어, 계시된 진리를 이해하는 근본적으로 다른 접근방식에서 비롯된다. 백스터는 인식론적 접근을 통해 성경의 객관적 권위와 충분성을 강조한 반면, 폭스는 경험적 접근을 통해 성령의 직접적 계시와 현재적 역사를 강조했다. 이러한 방법론적 차이는 온전함의 현존, 틀릴 수 없는 영감, 성경의 권위와 충분성 등 구체적인 쟁점들에서 화해할 수 없는 입장 차이로 나타났다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 기존 연구들이 주장한 백스터와 폭스 사이의 연속성보다는, 그들의 근본적인 신학적 차이와 그 차이의 토대를 밝힌다.

영문 초록

This article analyzes the debate between Richard Baxter (1615-1691) and George Fox (1624-1691) concerning the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Bible. This controversy reveals a significant theological confrontation between Protestant orthodoxy and Quakerism in the seventeenth century. The study examines the main points of contention between the two parties through Fox’s The Great Mystery and investigates the foundations of their respective theological positions. The differences between these two theologians stem not merely from divergent doctrinal interpretations but from fundamentally different approaches to understanding revealed truth. While Baxter emphasized the objective authority and sufficiency of the Bible through an epistemological approach, Fox stressed the direct revelation and present work of the Holy Spirit through an experiential approach. These methodological differences manifested in irreconcilable positions on specific issues such as the presence of perfection, infallible inspiration, and the authority and sufficiency of the Bible. Through this analysis, this study highlights the fundamental theological differences between Baxter and Fox and their underlying foundations, rather than the continuity between them as suggested by previous studies.
