국문 초록

시계의 역사를 살펴보면, 16세기에 이르러서 휴대가 가능한 회중시계가 등장하면서 시계는 장신구의 역할을 하게 되었고, 장신구를 제작하던 금속공예가들이 시계 제작에 뛰어들게 되었다. 하지만 지금의 시계 분야는 정밀 제조업으로 분류되어 첨단 기술과 융합한 독자적인 길을 가고 있다. 그래서 지금의 시계 분야는 금속공예에서 쉽게 접근하기 어려운 분야이다. 본 연구는 시계 제작에서 사용되는 표면 마감 기법을 금속공예의 영역에서 사용할 수 있게 변형하고 접목하는 방법에 중점을 두고 있다. 특히 표면 마감 기법의 다양화에 도움이 될 수 있을지 연구하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 시계 분야에서 사용되는 제네바 스트라이프 기법을 분석하고 실험해 보았다. 시계 제작 기법에는 특수한 도구와 기계들이 사용되는데 금속공예에서 사용되는 도구와 기계로 제네바 스트라이프가 구현 가능한지 실험해 보았으며, 이를 통해 시계 금속공예 장신구의 표면 마감 기법으로 활용 가능한지를 확인해 보았다. 이 연구를 통해 시계 분야와 금속공예 분야가 금속을 다루는 데 있어서 많은 공통점을 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었고, 서로 상호보완하며 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 볼 수 있었다. 또한, 시계 제작 기법을 활용하여 금속공예의 영역을 확장할 수 있는 가능성을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

Looking at the history of watches, when portable pocket watches appeared in the 16th century, watches began to play the role of accessories, and metal craftsmen who made accessories began to make watches. However, the current watch industry is classified as a precision manufacturing industry and is taking its own path by merging with advanced technology. Therefore, the current watch industry is a field that is difficult to approach in metal crafts. The purpose of this study is to study how to transform and graft the metal surface finishing technique used in watchmaking techniques to the field of metal crafts, and especially to study whether it can help diversify surface finishing techniques. To this end, I analyzed and experimented with the Geneva stripe techniques used in the watch industry. Special tools and machines are used in watchmaking techniques, and I experimented to see if Geneva stripes can be implemented with tools and machines used in metal crafts, and through this, I confirmed whether the watch surface finishing technique can be used as a surface finishing technique for metal crafts. Through this study, I was able to see that the watchmaking and metalworking fields have many commonalities in handling metals, and that they have the potential to develop in a mutually complementary manner. In addition, I confirmed the possibility of expanding the scope of metalworking by utilizing watchmaking techniques.
