국문 초록

본 연구는 디자인 분야에서 가장 활발하게 활용되고 있는 이미지 생성형 AI 모델인 DALL-E3와 Midjourney의 비교 분석을 통해, Text-to-Image 생성형 AI가 텍스타일 디자인 프로세스에 제공하는 활용성을 탐구하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 두 모델은 프롬프트 처리 방식부터 이미지 및 리핏 생성 그리고 수정 등 다양한 요구에 따라 상이한 특성과 유용성을 보이며, 이를 분석함으로써, 디자이너가 AI와 협력하여 창의적인 작업을 수행할 수 있는 방안을 제시한다. 연구 범위는 DALL-E3와 Midjourney를 중심으로, 텍스타일 디자인 프로세스에 대한 활용 가능성을 다루었다. 연구 방법은 두 가지 모델의 다양한 디자인 옵션과 수정 기능을 활용하여 텍스타일 패턴 디자인을 생성하고, 효율적으로 디자인 작업을 수행할 수 있는 가능성을 평가하는 방식으로 이루어졌다. 연구 결과, DALL-E3는 프롬프트에 대한 높은 이해력과 특정 요소를 세밀하게 수정할 수 있는 기능을 통해 디자인의 정밀성을 요구하는 텍스타일 작업에 유용한 도구로 평가되었다. 디자인 프로세스에서 색상과 패턴의 일관성을 유지하며 세부 조정을 수행하는 데 강점을 보였지만, 텍스타일 디자인의 핵심인 리핏 생성에서는 정확도의 한계를 보여 추가적인 수작업이 필요하였다. 반면, Midjourney는 패턴의 예술적인 스타일링과 다양한 매개변수를 활용하여 창의적 변형에 적합한 특성을 지닌다. 특히, ‘--tile’ 매개변수를 통해 정확한 리핏 생성이 가능한 장점이 있으며, 여러 옵션을 통해 디자인의 전체적인 분위기를 조정하는 데 유리하지만, 이미지의 세밀한 조정에서는 한계를 보였다. 이렇듯 두 가지 모델은 각기 뚜렷한 장단점을 가지고 있어 디자인 방향에 따른 선택이 필요하며, 현재로서는 추가적인 수작업이 불가피하다는 점을 확인하였다. 따라서 향후 연구에서는 이미지 생성형 AI의 한계와 문제점을 심층적으로 분석하고, 텍스타일 디자인 산업에서 실질적으로 적용 가능한 활용 방안을 마련하기 위한 기초 자료를 제공하는 것이 중요하다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the usability of Text-to-Image generative AI giving the textile design process through a comparative analysis of DALL-E3 and Midjourney, two of the most actively used image-generative AI models in the design field. The two models have different characteristics and usefulness depending on various needs, from how they handle prompts to creating and modifying images and repeats, and show how designers can collaborate with AI to accomplish creative tasks. The scope of this study addressed the usefulness of the textile design process, focusing on the application to DALL-E3 and Midjourney. The research methodology consisted of leveraging the various design options and modification functions of the two models to generate patterns and evaluate their potential for efficiently performing design tasks. In the study, DALL-E3 was found to be a useful tool for textile work that requires precision in design, with a high understanding of the prompts and the ability to fine-tune certain elements. During the design process, this model had strengths in making fine adjustments while maintaining color and pattern consistency, but it showed limitations in accuracy when it came to creating repeats, which is key to textile design, requiring additional manual processes. Midjourney, on the other hand, lends itself well to creative variations as it utilizes its artistic styling of patterns and a wide range of parameters. In particular, it has the advantage of enabling accurate repeat generation through the ‘--tile’ parameter, and the various design options are great for adjusting the overall look and feel of the design, but it's limited when it comes to fine-tuning images. As such, each of these two models has distinct advantages and disadvantages that require a choice based on the direction of design, and this study found that additional manual processes are unavoidable as of now. Therefore, it is important for future research to further analyze the limitations and problems of image-generative AI and provide a basis for establishing practical application methods in the textile design industry.
