영어트랙 유학생의 한국어학습에 대한 인식 및 현황조사 연구 : 어휘학습을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구는 부산시 소재 K대학교 영어트랙 유학생 185명을 대상으로 한국어학습에 대한 인식 및 현황을 살펴보고 그 중 어휘학습 현황을 심층적으로 파악해 보는 것에 목적을 두었다. 설문조사와 심층면담 결과 영어트랙 유학생들은 한국어를 습득하여 이를 활용하려는 목적이 한국어트랙 학습자들과는 차이점이 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 학습자들은 언어기능 중 말하기·듣기를 가장 필요로 하고 이러한 능력을 한국생활, 아르바이트 등에서 유용하게 사용할 수 있기를 원하고 있었다. 이를 위해 말하기·듣기 시간에 동료와 대화 연습하기, 한국인과 대화하기, 지문 외우기 활동을 선호하였다. 한국어를 학습하면서 늘어나는 어휘량에 대한 부담감, 한국생활에서 필요로 하는 어휘에 대한 부담감으로 교수자로부터 이 부분에 대한 도움을 받기를 원하고 있으나 학습자 스스로 부족한 어휘를 보완하려는 자기 주도적인 노력은 부족한 경향을 보였다. 새 어휘를 만날 때 단순히 어휘의 의미를 확인하는 정도에 그치고 형태에 대한 고려가 없으므로 새 어휘를 장기기억으로 전환할 수 있도록 의미망을 중심한 정보와 어휘를 형성하는 형태 교육이 이루어져야 한다. 어휘학습 방법으로는 사용을 가장 선호하였고 매체를 통해 다양한 대화 상황을 접촉하면서 어휘량을 늘이는 데에 관심이 많았다. 또 알고 싶은 어휘는 주로 한국생활이나 한국인과 대화, 아르바이트 등과 관련되어 있었다. 따라서 이러한 요구가 반영된 학습 단원이나 상황이 수업 내용에서 제공되면 한국어학습에 대한 동기 유발과 새 어휘를 학습하는 부담을 줄일 수 있을 것이다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 영어트랙 학습자를 대상으로 한 기초교양 한국어 수업은 말하기·듣기에 비중을 두고 다양한 방법으로 어휘량 증가를 위한 학습을 중점적으로 고려해야 하는 등의 학습자 특성에 맞는 맞춤형 교육이 필요하다고 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to investigate the perceptions and the current state of Korean language learning among 185 international students enrolled in the English track at K University in Busan, with a particular focus on vocabulary learning. Based on the results of surveys and in-depth interviews, the learners expressed the highest need for speaking and listening skills among language functions and hoped to utilize these skills effectively in their daily lives, part-time jobs, and other activities in Korea. To achieve this, they preferred activities such as practicing conversations with peers during speaking and listening classes, conversing with Koreans, and memorizing texts. Learners felt burdened by the growing vocabulary required in Korean language learning and by the vocabulary needed for their daily lives in Korea. While they wished to receive support from instructors in this area, they showed a lack of self-directed effort to supplement their limited vocabulary independently. Among vocabulary learning methods, they favored learning through use and showed great interest in increasing their vocabulary by encountering various conversational contexts through media. Additionally, the vocabulary they wanted to learn was mainly related to daily life in Korea, conversations with Koreans, and part-time jobs. Based on these findings, this study suggests that foundational liberal arts Korean language classes for English-track students should focus heavily on speaking and listening while incorporating diverse methods to increase vocabulary. A tailored educational approach that considers the specific characteristics of these learners is necessary.
