부정적 편향을 나타내는 ‘-을까 말까 하다’ 구문

국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘-을까 말까 하다’가 부정적 편향을 지니는 경우가 있음을 보이고 부정적 편향을 나타내는 특정한 문맥이 무엇인지를 설명하는 데에 목적이 있다. 영어에서 부정적 편향을 나타내는 척도 표현의 특성을 바탕으로, 한국어에서는 낮은 척도에 위치한 표현이 부정적 편향을 강조하는 중요한 역할을 한다는 점을 제시하였다. 또한, ‘-을까 말까 하다’ 구문에서는 낮은 지점의 척도 표현이 부정적 편향을 나타내면서도 영어와 달리 부정극어로 취급되지 않는 차이를 확인하였다. ‘-을까 말까 하다’ 구문과 결합할 수 있는 양의 척도와 빈도 척도를 살펴보았으며, 사태 발생 가능성이 매우 낮음을 표현하기 위한 방책을 제시하였다. 양의 척도가 사용될 경우, ‘-을까 말까 하다’는 주로 특정 개체가 참조값에 도달할 가능성이 낮다는 의미를 나타낸다. 빈도 척도와 결합할 경우, ‘-을까 말까 하다’는 사태 발생 가능성이 극히 낮다는 의미를 나타낸다. 양의 척도 또는 빈도 척도가 쓰인 ‘-을까 말까 하다’가 관형 형식으로써 후행 형용사의 심한 정도를 극대화하여 나타내기도 한다. 한편, 사태의 발생 가능성을 극히 낮다는 의미를 나타내기 위해 극단적인 사태를 최소 조건으로 설정하거나 가능성이 낮은 사태와 비교하는 방책을 사용한 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해, ‘-을까 말까 하다’ 구문은 화자의 경험과 세상 지식을 바탕으로 개념 척도에 대한 정교한 추론을 표현하는 중요한 언어적 수단임을 입증하였다. 향후 과제로서 ‘편향’이라는 의미론적 개념을 한국어학적으로 체계화하기 위해 이를 나타내는 다양한 한국어 구문과 구성을 수집하고 체계화할 필요성을 제안한다. 한국어의 구문과 구성이 지니는 고유한 의미적 기능과 통사적 특징을 심도 있게 모색하고 ‘편향’을 나타내는 언어적 방책을 유형화함으로써, ‘편향’에 대한 보다 체계적이고 정교한 이해에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explain the specific contexts and diverse syntactic features of the negative bias expressed by the construction ‘-lkka malkka hada’. First, based on the characteristics of scalar expressions that indicate negative bias in English, it was demonstrated that expressions located at the low scale play a crucial role in emphasizing negative bias in Korean. Furthermore, it was observed that, unlike English, scalar expressions in the ‘-lkka malkka hada’ construction, while indicating negative bias, are not treated as negative polarity items. The study examined the amount scales and the frequency scales that can combine with the ‘-lkka malkka hada’ construction and proposed strategies to express an extremely low likelihood of an event occurring. When an amount scales is used, ‘-lkka malkka hada’ conveys the meaning that the likelihood of a specific entity reaching the reference value is low. When combined with a frequency scale, the construction indicates that the possibility of the event occurring is extremely low. In cases where either a positive scale or a frequency scale is used, ‘-lkka malkka hada’ in its adnominal form can also convey the extreme degree of the following adjective. Additionally, strategies such as setting an extreme event as the minimum condition or comparing it with an even less likely event were identified to emphasize the exceedingly low probability of occurrence. This analysis demonstrates that the ‘-lkka malkka hada’ construction serves as an important linguistic tool for expressing refined inferences about scales based on the speaker’s experience and knowledge. As a future research direction, the study suggests the necessity of systematically collecting and analyzing various constructions and configurations that express the semantic concept of ‘bias’ in Korean linguistics. By categorizing the linguistic strategies for representing ‘bias’ in Korean and deeply examining the unique semantic functions and syntactic characteristics of each construction, this research aims to contribute to a more systematic and sophisticated understanding of ‘bias’.
