국경 지역 학교에서 바라본 문화적 공감의 의의 : 태국-미얀마 국경 지역을 사례로

국문 초록

문화적 공감은 다른 문화나 민족적 배경을 가진 타인의 경험을 이해하고 정서적으로 공감하는 역량을 의미한다. 국경 지역은 이주로 인해 다양한 문화적 배경을 지닌 집단이 모여 사는 공간으로, 문화적 공감의 역량을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 곳이자 그 중요성이 더욱 요구되는 곳이기도 하다. 본 연구는 자문화기술지를 활용하여 교사로서의 경험과 교수 여정을 토대로 태국-미얀마 국경 지역에 위치한 학교에서 찾아볼 수 있는 문화적 공감의 요소를 분석하고, 문화적 공감이 교육 공동체에서 어떤 역할을 하고 있는지에 대한 의의를 제시하였다. 이를 위해 문화적 공감 측정 도구의 ‘공감적 감정과 표현, 공감적 관점 취하기, 문화적 차이의 수용, 공감적 인식’이라는 4가지 하위 요소를 추출하여 태국-미얀마 국경의 현지 학교의 사례를 분석하였다. 이 글은 다양한 문화가 혼재하는 국경 지역에서 문화적 공감이 하는 역할을 밝힘으로써, 누구나 경험할 수 있는 문화적 차이를 문화적 공감의 관점으로 수용하는 것의 중요성을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Cultural empathy refers to the ability to understand and emotionally empathize with the experiences of others who have different cultures or ethnic backgrounds. Border regions are places where groups with diverse cultural backgrounds live together due to immigration, and it is a place where cultural empathy is easily found and its importance is even more demanded. This study analyzed the elements of cultural empathy found in schools located in the Thailand-Myanmar border region based on the teacher's experience and teaching journey by utilizing autoethnography, and presented the significance of the role of cultural empathy in the educational community. To this end, the four sub-elements of the cultural empathy measurement tool, ‘Empathic feeling and expression, Empathic perspective taking, Acceptance of cultural differences, and Empathic awareness’ were extracted and cases observed in local schools on the Thailand-Myanmar border were analyzed. This article aims to reveal the role of cultural empathy in border regions where various cultures coexist, and to suggest the importance of accepting cultural differences that anyone can experience from the perspective of cultural empathy.
