Exploring the Applicability of Digital Neuropsychological Assessments: A Comparative Study of CANTAB and CERAD-K in Elderly Koreans

This study examines the potential applicability of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) for cognitive assessment in elderly Koreans, compared to the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Korean version (CERAD-K). Factor analyses identified distinct cognitive domains in both tools, with CANTAB assessing broader constructs such as spatial working memory and switching/inhibition, while CERAD-K emphasized traditional domains like verbal ability and episodic memory. Age and education significantly influenced performance across cognitive domains, with older and less-educated participants demonstrating poorer outcomes. Gender differences were minimal, except for processing speed. Memory-related CANTAB subtests correlated with all CERAD-K cognitive domains, while other CANTAB subtests displayed task-specific relationships. These findings suggest the complementary nature of CANTAB and CERAD-K, underscoring the need for culturally tailored norms. However, the study's limitations, including a small sample size and cross-sectional design, necessitate cautious interpretation. Further large-scale, longitudinal research is needed to validate CANTAB's diagnostic potential for age-related cognitive decline in diverse Korean populations.
