국문 초록

『리바이어던』 4부 ‘어둠의 왕국’은 이전의 1부(인간), 2부(국가), 3부(기독교 국가)의 경우 논리적인 전개라고 한다면, 4부(어둠의 왕국)의 경우 비유적이고 상징적인 성격을 갖는다. 그래서 4부가 이전의 논의와 연속성을 갖지 않는 것은 근본적으로 홉스가 리바이어던의 전개 과정을 변경하고 있기 때문이다. 하지만 그 변화는 충분히 그 나름의 의미를 담고 있다. 그것이 의미하는 것은 ‘어둠의 왕국’이라는 비유적인 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 내용 역시 은유적인 내용으로 이루어져 있다. 우리의 예상이 빗나가게 되면서 무엇보다 의구심이 드는 것은 ‘우상 숭배’와 ‘기독교적 전통’에 관한 것이다. 은유적인 내용으로 구성된 이러한 개념들과 4장을 이해하기 위하여 홉스의 의도를 파악하는 것은 무엇보다 중요하다. 특히, 이를 이해하기 위한 전제 조건은 철학이 무엇인지에 대한 홉스의 의도에 대한 이해이다. 따라서 이 글의 목적은 4장을 단순히 논리적이고 예측 가능한 범위에 한정시켜 이해하고 해석하는 것이 아니라, 『리바이어던』 전체적인 흐름을 염두에 두면서 홉스의 숨은 의도를 파악하여 이를 재해석하는데 주안점을 두고 있다.

영문 초록

“The Kingdom of Darkness” in Part 4 of Leviathan has a figurative and symbolic character in the case of the previous Part 1(human), Part 2(state), and Part 3(Christian state). Therefore, the reason why Part 4 does not have continuity with previous discussions is that Hobbs is fundamentally changing the development process of Leviathan. However, the change has its own meaning. What it means is that the content is also composed of metaphorical content, as can be seen from the metaphorical title of “Kingdom of Darkness.” When our expectations are wrong, the most questionable thing is about “idol worship” and “Christian tradition.” Understanding Hobbs’ intentions is of paramount importance to understand these concepts and Chapter 4, which are composed of metaphorical content. In particular, the prerequisite for understanding this is Hobbes’ understanding of what philosophy is. Therefore, the purpose of this sentence is not to simply limit Chapter 4 to a logical and predictable extent and to understand and interpret Hobbes’ hidden intentions with the overall flow of Leviathan in mind.
