국문 초록

본 연구는 국내 대학의 실용음악과에 재학하고 있는 외국인 학생들의 학업경험을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 해당 목적에 적합한 연구 방법인 문화기술지를 시행하기 위해 연구자가 강의를 실시하고 있는 3개 대학교에서 설문과 면담에 동의한 외국인 유학생 8명을 연구 참여자로 선정하여 심층면담을 실시하였고 John W. Creswell(2017)의 방법에 따라 자료를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 아시아 국가 출신의 연구 참여자들은 한류의 영향, 수월한 입시 전형, 가족들의 지지로 인해 자연스럽게 유학 결심을 했음을 알 수 있었지만, 한국 생활을 적응하는데 있어서 숙소 문제, 관계 형성 문제 등으로 인해 어려움을 느꼈다. 부족한 어휘 실력으로 인해 학업에서의 난관이 있었고, 이에 추가적인 자가 학습을 시행하거나 좌절을 느끼는 자들도 있었다. 하지만 시간이 흐르며 수업환경에 적응하고 새로운 활동을 통해 성취감과 음악인으로 성장함을 느꼈고, 각자 한국에서 또는 자국에 돌아가 음악활동을 지속해 나갈 의지를 엿볼 수 있었다. 본 연구는 국내에 증가하고 있는 외국인 학생들의 실용음악과 학업 경험에 대해 구조적으로 제시하여 깊이 있는 이해를 도모하였다는 데 의의가 있으며, 그들의 학업 환경 개선을 위한 자료로서 활용될 것으로 기대되는 바이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the learning experiences of foreign students enrolled in applied music departments at domestic universities. In order to implement a suitable research method, ethnography for the purpose, eight foreign students who agreed to the survey and interview at the three universities where the researcher teaches were selected as research participants and conducted in-depth interviews according to the method of John W. Creswell (2017). As a result, it was found that research participants from Asian countries naturally decided to study abroad to South Korea due to the influence of the Korean Wave, easy entrance exam process, and support from their families, but they felt difficulties adjusting to life in Korea due to problems with accommodation and relationship formation. There were difficulties in school due to insufficient language skills, and some students had to engage in additional self-study or felt frustrated. However, as they soon adapted to the class environment and felt a sense of accomplishment as well as they felt they were growing as musicians through new activities. Also it was able to report that they will to continue their musical activities in Korea or upon returning to their home countries. This study is significant in the sense that it helped understanding of the academic experiences of foreign students attending the Department of Applied Music, with the increasing number of international students in Korea. Also, it is expected this study to be used as data to improve their learning environment.
