학위 과정 유학생의 접촉 지대에 관한 일고찰

국문 초록

이 논문은 유학생과 접촉 지대의 상호 관련성을 논의하고 그들이 어떠한 접촉 지대에서 어떠한 의사소통 기능을 수행하고 있는가를 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 한국 사회와 한국어교육 논의에서 중요한 비중을 차지하고 있는 외국인 유학생에게 어떠한 관심과 지원, 교육적 환기가 필요한가를 고찰하였다. 한국에서 학업을 수행하고 있는 유학생이 한국의 공적· 사적 지대에서 어떠한 언어 수행을 하고 있는지를 설문조사하고 면담한 결과는 다음과 같이 집약된다. 첫째, 유학생은 대부분의 시간을 ‘학교’에서 보내면서 학업을 위한 공식적·비공식적 정보들을 얻고 있다. 둘째, 과제 수행이나 식사, 취미 생활, SNS 활동은 ‘집’에서 홀로 하고 있다. 셋째, 유학생을 대하는 한국인의 시선과 태도 안에는 순혈주의와 차별 의식, 영어 중심성이 암암리에 작동되고 있다. 이 논문은 유학생이 어떤 접촉 지대에서 학업과 일상생활, 자아실현, 정체성 신장을 위한 언어 수행에 참여하고 있는가를 다루었다. 이 연구의 가치는 한국에 도래한 다중언어 세상을 묘사하는데 기여하고, 유학생의 언어 수행 생태가 확장될 수 있는 방향을 논구하였다는 점에 있다.

영문 초록

This paper discussed the relationship between foreign students and the contact zone and analyzed what kind of language they were practicing in which contact zone. Based on the analysis results, I examined what kind of attention, support, and educational attention is needed for foreign students who occupy an important role in Korean society and discussions on Korean language education. The results of the survey and interviews on what kind of language students are practicing in public and private spaces in Korea are summarized as follows. First, foreign students receive formal and informal information for their studies mainly in the ‘school’ space. Second, completing assignments, eating, engaging in hobbies, and engaging in social media activities are done alone at home. Third, Koreans' views and attitudes towards foreign students are influenced by pure-bloodism, discriminatory awareness, and Englishcentrism. This paper is a contact zone study on where foreign students participate in language practice for academics, daily life, self-realization, and identity development, and will contribute to describing the multilingual world in Korea. In addition, the research is valuable in that it suggests directions in which the language performance ecology of foreign students can be expanded.
