딸들의 가정폭력 피해 경험과 가족 내 젠더 역동 : 20ㆍ30대 여성들의 생애사 분석을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 20ㆍ30대 여성들의 생애사를 통해 딸의 위치에서 경험한 가정폭력 피해와 그의미가 무엇인지 질문하며, 딸들의 가정폭력 피해에 젠더가 작동하는 방식과 가족이라는 젠더관계에 발생하는 역동을 밝히고자 하였다. 딸들이 지시하는 가정폭력 피해는 아버지가 주요가해자이며 아내학대가 동시에 가해진다는 공통점이 있었으나, 이성애 파트너 관계를 중심으로 가정폭력을 설명하는 방식으로는 포섭되지 않는 특징들을 가지고 있었다. 딸들은 어머니와 유사하거나 혹은 그 대용물로서의 위치에서 성적 지배와 모욕의 대상, 감정적 위무(慰撫) 의 주체, 가족 돌봄의 책임을 인수하는 존재로서 가정폭력을 경험했다. 가정폭력 피해가 철저히 사사화(私事化)되는 상황에는 가족의 욕구를 우선시할 수밖에 없는 상황이 영향을 미치기도 했으며, 가부장이 교육할 자격을 명분으로 딸을 규율하려는 시도가 나타나기도 했다. 딸들의 가정폭력 피해는 피해 그 자체보다도 그것이 삶에 가져온 영향을 중심으로 의미화되고 있었다. 왜곡된 가정폭력 담론에 의해 피해 명명과 의미화의 어려움이 나타나기도 하지만, 가정폭력 피해는 주로 개인의 성공을 제약하는 요인으로 의미화되었다. 이때 성공의 기틀 역시 계층, 학력 등을 비롯한 가족의 상황마다 다르게 나타났다. 한편 폭력에 대한 분노가 페미니즘에 입각한 젠더폭력과 상호돌봄에 대한 문제의식으로 벼려 나가는 기반으로 의미화되기도 하였다. 위 연구는 아내학대와 여하한 가족 내 폭력이 별개로 논의되던 것, 아동학대를 몰성적으로 바라보던 것에서 나아가 가족 내 다기한 권력 관계와 그 역동에 기반한 폭력을 젠더폭력의 연속선에서 조명할 필요성을 제기하며, 가정폭력 피해에 대한 인식과 대응에 개입하는 사회적 요소들을 식별할 것을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the experiences and implications of domestic violence victimization from the position of a daughter through the life history of women in their 20s and 30s, with the aim of revealing the ways in which gender operates in daughters’ domestic violence victimization and the dynamics that occur in gendered relationships within the family. While the daughters’ accounts of domestic violence shared commonalities in that fathers were the primary perpetrators and wife abuse was co-occurring, they also had features that are not captured by accounts of intimate partner violence: daughters experienced domestic violence in a position similar to, or as a substitute for, their mothers, as objects of sexual domination and humiliation, as objects of emotional comfort, and as persons taking over family care responsibilities. The thorough privatization of domestic violence victimization was also influenced by the need to prioritize family needs, with patriarchs attempting to discipline their daughters in the name of their educational qualifications. The daughters’ victimization of domestic violence is signified in terms of the impact it has had on their lives, rather than the victimization itself. While the difficulties in naming and signifying victimization are sometimes exacerbated by the distorted discourse of domestic violence, domestic violence victimization is primarily signified as a constraint on personal success. The basis for success varied depending on the family context, including class, education, etc. On the other hand, anger at the violence was also signified as a basis for developing a feminist understanding of gendered violence and mutual care. This study suggests that it is necessary to move away from discussing wife abuse and other intrafamilial violence in isolation, and child abuse in isolation, and to consider violence based on multiple power relations and dynamics within the family as a continuum of gendered violence, and to identify social factors that intervene in the perception and response to domestic violence victims.
