Objectives: This study aimed to understand experiences of female peer support workers for alcohol use disorder and to reveal the sig- nificance of these experiences in their lives. It delved into unique challenges faced by these women due to societal biases against female drinking and gender-based double standards. It also explored the dual role they played as both recovering addicts and counselors, seek- ing to uncover deeper meanings of their experiences.
Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with five female peer support workers working in Addiction Centers in South Korea. Data were analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method.
Results: Results of analysis revealed the following four essential themes derived from 95 significant statements and 20 formulated meanings: ‘Surviving as a female drinker in Korea,’ ‘Growth beyond addiction,’ ‘Co-creating a shared life of renewal,’ and ‘Weaving heal- ing through women’s strength.’ Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of focusing on the transition of female alcohol addicts from recovery to becoming counselors, proposing a fundamental approach to strengthening peer support programs in addiction counseling. Findings of this study can serve as foundational knowledge for supporting activities of female peer support workers for alcohol use disorder in South Korea.
