Hartmut Rosa, as a representative of the fourth generation of the Frankfurt School, inherited and developed the critical theories of his predecessors, focusing on the roots of time pressure and alienation in modern society. His theory of social acceleration aims to parse the alienation between people and time, people and others, and people and themselves brought about by the accelerated pace of modern society. Rosa identifies the rapid pace of technological progress and social change as the main cause of these alienation phenomena. To address these challenges, he advocates a better life through the construction of empathic relationships, emphasising the search for harmonious interaction with the environment, others and the self in daily life. Although Rosa’s theory is controversial in practice, for example, the neglect of individual agency, the unidimensionality of technological progress and the idealisation of the “post-growth society” reform programme, the perspective and methodology he adopts in his theory is still a useful exploration. Through his theory, we can rethink how to find inner balance and harmony in a fast-paced society, so as to achieve deeper social resonance and individual happiness.
