In this article, I examine the correspondence between the presumptive expressions in Japanese, souda, youda, mitaida, and rashii and their Korean counterparts in terms of their semantic usages by examining Japanese novels and their Korean translations. The results of the present work are summarised as follows. First, the presumptive usage of souda mainly corresponds to ‘ㄹ 것 같 다’. It also corresponds to ‘ㄹ 듯하다’ and ’ㄹ 뻔하다’. The ‘visual- evidential’- related presumptive usage of souda mainly corresponds to ‘ㄴ 듯’ and ‘해 보인다’. It also corresponds to ‘ㄹ 것 같다’. Second, the presumptive usage of youda mainly corresponds to ‘ㄴ 듯’ and ‘ㄴ 것 같 다’. It also corresponds to elliptical expressions, ‘처럼’, and ‘ㄴ 모양이다’. The metaphorical/illustrative usage of youda mainly corresponds to ‘처럼’, ‘같다’, and ‘ㄴ 듯’. Third, the presumptive usage of mitaida mainly corresponds to ‘ㄴ 것 같다’. Its metaphorical usage corresponds to ‘같다’ and ‘처럼’, and its illustrative usage to ‘같다’. Finally, the presumptive usage of rashii corresponds to ‘인 모양이다’, ‘ㄴ 것 같다’, ‘ㄴ 듯’, and ‘라고 한다’. In its hearsay usage, it corresponds to ‘ㄴ 모양 이다’ and ‘라고 한다’, and in its situational-judgement usage, it corresponds to ‘ㄴ 것 같다’ and ‘ㄴ 듯’. These results suggest that Korean learners of the Japanese language positively make use of their L1 transfer when they use the four presumptive expressions in Japanese, souda, youda, mitaida, and rashii.
