This study aims to present a descriptive account of the basic elements - determiner and noun - of the noun phrase, through the analysis of the examples found in Early Modern English, in which I naturally dwell especially upon the distinctive characteristics which differentiate them from present-day usuage.
The basic structure of the noun phrase in Early Modern English is the same as in present-day English. In the simplest form there is a head(a noun), which can stand alone, or can be accompanied by a determiner, or by an adjective, or by both. The order of the elements is D - A - N. There are numerous expansions of this pattern, and variants on it, most of which are the same as in today's English. But some are obviously different from those of Current English. Moreover, some of the variants of the D - A - N pattern are no longer normal usage.
The system of determiners is much the same as in present-day English, but there are some differences of detail. In the basic pattern, the head in present-day English must be a noun, but in Early Modern English even pronoun is sometimes used instead; that is, a pronun sometimes has determiner and adjective adjuncts.
