This study investigates the effects of domestic and abroad educational backgrounds on the English reading strategies of Korean college students. Eight subject samples belonged to two groups: one those who had been in abroad, and the other who were educated in Korea only. The recorded think-aloud protocols were labeled according to strategy categories. Each subject did self-analysis and oral interview about their own reading strategies. The results show that the returnee students may have some difficulties in reading, recall, and reading tests although they may have no difficulty in understanding the English text. Domestically educated students tend to acquire test-oriented reading strategies which must have been gotten from the college-entrance examination. The research suggests that the instructor should recognize the difficulties of returnee students. For the Korean college students who were accustomed to reading for tests, diverse English reading activities such as extensive reading, reading for pleasure are suggested especially in the college English reading course where students can be free from the pressure of any specific English test.
