Collocation is about words which occur together naturally in the language use. If students do not know how a word is used, they do not know or own a word. By focusing students' attention on mis-collocation we make them aware that learning more vocabulary is not just learning new words but learning familiar words in new combinations.
Teachers need to present collocations in a positive way as if they were no more unusual word forms, this attitude affects the students' perception towards collocation to regard them as useful information as one more thing to learn. It is up to the teachers to call students' attention to useful collocations, practice them in a regular, systematic manner. Any successful methodology needs to maintain involvement and motivation.
Teaching collocation shifts students' focus from individual words to chunks of language. These chunks improve the fluency and accuracy of the English learning students. Collocation allows them to think more quickly and communicate more efficiently. Teaching collocation includes training students to use available resources when they move from receptive to productive language.
