영어색채어의 비유적 의미 분석

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 영어 색채어의 은유적 의미와 의미 확장에 대한 분석을 제시한다. 이를 위해 Berlin과 Kay의 기본 색채어 연구를 참고하였으며, ‘black, white, red, yellow, blue’ 다섯 가지의 기본 색채어를 중심으로 개념적 은유 및 의미 확장을 탐구하였다. 방법 연구 방법으로는 먼저 영어 색채어의 은유적 표현을 사전 및 코퍼스 자료를 통해 수집하였다. 이를 통해 어떠한 개념적 은유가 각 색채어에 대해 나타나는지를 확인하였다. 또한, Berlin과 Kay의 연구를 참고하여 기본 색채어의 특징을 고려하여 은유적 의미를 개념적으로 분류하였다. 결과 분석 결과, ‘black, white, red, yellow, blue’ 다섯 가지 색채어 모두 여러 가지 개념적 은유가 나타났다. 예를 들어, ‘black’의 경우 BADNESS IS BLACK, DEPRESSION IS BLACK, UNCONSCIOUS IS BLACK 등 다양한 개념적 은유를 포함하고 있었다. 결론 영어 색채어는 단순한 색의 표현을 넘어 은유적 의미로 확장되는 경향이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 색채어의 은유적 특성은 다양한 의미 연구 및 은유 연구에 새로운 관점과 함께 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to elucidate the figurative meanings of color terms in English. Methods To achieve this, the thesis conducts a comprehensive study on the figurative meanings of the fundamental color terms in English, focusing on metaphor and metonymy. The primary colors examined are black, white, red, yellow, and blue. Results The study reveals that the majority of color terms in English possess both referential and extended meanings. For instance, the color term ‘black’ is associated with various figurative meanings such as BADNESS IS BLACK, DEPRESSION IS BLACK, UNCONSCIOUS IS BLACK, ILLEGALITY IS BLACK, SURPLUS IS BLACK, ANGER IS BLACK, EVIL IS BLACK, SARCASM IS BLACK, UNKNOWN IS BLACK, BRUISED IS BLACK. Conclusions Color terms demonstrate systematic motivation through semantic extension mechanisms. Most expressions exhibit metonymic motivation, forming the basis for numerous color terms that are subsequently extended metaphorically.
