This paper explores a change in the family system in Korean cinema during the Japanese colonial period. I intend to consider this point through 15 films from the Cross Road of the Youth (Jongwha Ahn, 1936)to Love and Oath (Inkyu Choi & Imai Tadashi, 1945). ‘Father’ characters had not appeared at the Korean films by the 1930s. If any, they were evil or incompetent. This is a negative image of Chosun. On the other hand, a new generation appeared in the films over the mid 1930s to the early 1940s. He rescues a woman who was in danger, or aims at saving his country in crisis. In particular, the latter is related to pro-Japanese inclination, which is closely associated with the revival of patriarchism in the films around the mid 1940s. Unusually, mother in the movies in this period also has the same power. This reflects Chosun society under Japan’s Naeseon-Ilche policy (the Assimilation of Japan and Korea), based on the Emperor system. Therefore, these films embody family-nation formation, centered the Emperor, as a expanded concept of family.
