‘아시아 영화 허브’의 기치 내세우기

국문 초록

동아시아 영화제 지도에서 볼 때 부산국제영화제와 홍콩국제영화제는 흥미로운 비교 사례를 드러낸다. 두 영화제는 유럽과 북미의 영화제 제도에 대응하려는의도가 낳은 탈식민적(홍콩) 혹은 시민적(부산) 문화기획이라는 출발점을 공유하며 역사적으로 중요한 전환기에 탄생했다. 비록 서로 다른 시기에 달성된 것이긴하지만, 아시아의 대표적 영화제라는 기치를 선점하고자 전략적으로 타 동아시아영화제들과 경쟁해왔다는 점은 두 영화제가 공유하는 핵심적인 공통점을 드러낸다. 초기 아시아 중심의 영화제라는 정체성 확립에 주력하여 아시아 영화의 쇼케이스로서 자리를 잡고, 이후 단계적으로 시장 기능화, 대규모 복합 영화제화, 대중화 및 시민 참여화 등의 경로를 거치면서 다변화를 모색해왔다는 점도 홍콩과부산의 두 영화제를 실질적인 접점 속에서 고려하도록 해준다. 본 연구는 부산국제영화제와 홍콩국제영화제를 상호 네트워크적으로 파악하려는 시도를 중점적으로 수행하고자 하며, 이를 위해 주변국 영화제들까지 동반하는 동아시아의 국제영화제 지도가 어떻게 그려지고 있는지를 드러내고자 한다. 두 영화제에 대한 비교는 동아시아에서 영화제들이 어떻게 순환하고 있는가를시사해주면서 궁극적으로는 영화제들 간 상호적으로 맺는 위치성과 관계성에 대해 심도 있게 숙고해보도록 촉구한다. 이를 통해 아시아 대표적 영화제라는 부산국제영화제의 명성을 되풀이하여 주창하는 것으로는 결코 드러나지 않는 영화제지도의 전지구적/아시아적/지역적인 글로컬(glocal)한 지평이 지리적 경계뿐만 아니라 시기의 흐름을 가로지르며 그 모습을 드러내는 것이다.

영문 초록

Seen on the map of film festivals in East Asia, the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) reveal an interesting case for comparison. The two film festivals were born at historically important momentums in the civic cultural movement of respectively post-colonial (Hong Kong) and democratic (Busan) turn, whereas they were both responding to the European and North American film festival establishments. Both BIFF and HKIFF have achieved, albeit at different times, the status of Asia’s leading film festival and competed with other East Asian film festivals strategically. A commonality shared by BIFF and HKIFF shows a set of key developments: first, establishing themselves as a showcase for Asian films; gradually incorporating the market components into the festival functions; evolving into a large-scale complex film festival; and ever expanding the space for popular participation. This study intends to understand the BIFF and the HKIFF as agents of interactive networking, and in so doing to reveal how the map of the East Asian film festivals, which necessarily includes those in neighboring countries, is practically being drawn. The comparison of the two film festivals suggests how film festivals are circulating and competing with each others in East Asia and urges us to think more about the positionality and relationality occupied by different film festivals. Ultimately, this process leads us to the glocal horizon of the film festival map encompassing not only geographical boundaries but different time zones, something that is rarely revealed by focusing solely on the reputation of the Busan International Film Festival as a representative film festival in Asia.
