군사지도첩으로서의 『해동지도』 편제 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 지도첩으로서 『해동지도』에 주목하고, 지도첩의 제작 경위, 표지와 표제, 지도첩의 전체 구성, 각 첩 안에서의 지도 구성을 분석함으로써 제작 목적과 의도를 파악하고자 하였다. 『해동지도』는 지방에서 제작한 군현지도에 중앙정부에서 필요에 따라 주기를 첨가하여 지리정보를 보완하고, 군사적 요충지의 지도 등을 추가로 제작하여 1750년 경 최종 편찬한 것으로 추정된다. 그리고 지도첩의 전체 구성은 여타의 지도첩에서 볼 수 없는 편집 형태인데, 조선시대 수도와 경기도를 중심에 두고 팔도가 조선시대 9대로 방향으로 배치된 점, 관북과 북관 다음에 접경지역인 서북 지역이 배치된 점, 마지막 첩에 팔도전도가 배치된 점 등을 미루어볼 때 중앙정부에서 행정적·군사적 이용을 목적으로 제작한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 첩별 지도 배치 순서를 분석한 결과, 중앙정부는 해동지도에 임진왜란과 정유재란 이후 수도와 전라도의 방어선을, 정묘호란과 병자호란 이후 의주대로와 접경지역의 방어선을 구축한 것을 반영하는 동시에 조선의 강역을 완결하고자 한 것으로 보인다. 본 연구는 지도첩으로서의 『해동지도』를 조명한 첫 연구로서 의의를 지니며, 추후 각 지도에 반영된 지리정보 분석을 통한 군사지도첩으로서 『해동지도』의 특징을 밝히는 과정이 필요하다.

영문 초록

The objective of this study is to analyze the “Haedongjido” atlas and comprehend its purpose and intentions. The analysis will also focus on the atlas's production history, cover and title, overall composition, and the organization of maps within each volume. The “Haedongjido” is believed to have been compiled around 1750, when the central government supplemented geographic information by adding notes as needed to the locally produced county maps and produced additional maps of military strongholds. The atlas is a unique compilation in that the Joseon Dynasty capital and Gyeonggi Province placed at the center while the eight provinces are arranged in the direction of the Nine-daero of the Joseon Dynasty. Other features of the atalas are that the border regions of the Seobuk follow Gwanbuk and Bukwan and that Paldojeondo is included in the last volume. Those features imply that the atlas was produced for administrative and military purposes by the central government. By analyzing the order of map placement by volume, it appears that the central government aimed to complete Joseon's national territory while considering the defense of the capital and Jeolla province after the Imjin War and the Jeongju War, as well as the defense of Uiju-daero and bordering areas after the Manchu invasion of 1627 and the Manchu War in 1636. This study is significant as it sheds light on the “Haedongjido” as an atlas. In order to identify the characteristics of “Haedongjido” as a military atlas, it is necessary to analyze the geographic information reflected in each map in the future.
