국문 초록

정서적 양극화(affective polarization)에 관한 그동안의 연구들은 그 이론적 시각의 차이에도 불구하고 정서적 양극화가 당파적 정렬(partisan sorting)과 관련되어 있을 가능성을 시사한다. 이에 이 연구는 한국 유권자들의 정서적 양극화와 이념적 정렬(ideological sorting)의 관계를 18대, 19대, 20대 대통령선거 여론조사 결과를 이용하여 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 우선 한국 유권자들의 정서적 양극화와 이념적 정렬은 동시에 진행되었다고 할 수 있다. 즉, 18대 대선 이후 양당 지지자들이 점차 진보와 보수로 결집하면서 동시에 이들 사이의 정서적 양극화가 심화한 것이다. 또한, 이러한 이념적 차이의 확대와 정서적 양극화는 실제로 밀접한 연관이 있었던 것으로 나타났다. 핵심적으로, 지난 세 차례 대선을 거치면서 이념 성향이 정서적 양극화에 미친 영향은 계속해서 강해졌다. 이것은 이념적 정렬에 따른 양당 지지자들 사이의 이념적 차이의 확대가 정서적 양극화에 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 의미한다. 종합적으로, 이 연구는 적어도 18대 대선 이후 한국 유권자들의 정서적 양극화가 이념적 정렬과 밀접한 연관이 있었다는 것을 시사한다. 정서적 양극화의 원인 중 하나가 이념적 차이의 확대일 수 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

Studies on the cause of affective polarization, despite the difference in their theoretical perspective, suggest that affective polarization is likely to be related to partisan sorting. This study investigates how Korean voters’ affective polarization is related to ideological sorting using three presidential election survey data since 2010s. The results show that the affective polarization and ideological sorting took place together since the 2012 election. That is, affective polarization increased while the supporters of the two largest parties in Korea got more ideologically extreme. Moreover, this increased ideological distance actually influenced affective polarization. In essence, the effect of ideological strength on affective polarization has steadily increased over time, indicating that the increase in ideological difference impacted affective polarization. Overall, the study suggests that the affective polarization in Korea since the 2012 election was closely related to the increase in ideological difference. That is, ideological sorting may be one of the reasons of affective polarization in Korea.
