This study investigated how text elaboration would affect reading comprehension of Korean text and incidental learning of Korean words and expressions by two groups of Chinese L2 learners of Korean (n = 49) while reading. The treatment group (n = 24) read lexically elaborated text, whereas the comparison group (n = 25) read unmodified text. After reading, they were asked to perform a cued recall task and a surprise vocabulary posttest in their L1 (i.e., Chinese). Their written recall protocols, collected this way, were later analyzed by three native speakers of Chinese. No statistically significant differences were found between two groups in terms of reading comprehension and incidental vocabulary learning, but a trend favoring the treatment group over the comparison group was observed. The study ends with recommendations for further research and implications for teaching Korean for Academic Purposes and Korean as a Foreign Language in terms of reading and vocabulary materials development.
