The purpose of this study is to verify the correlation between the perception and the production of pronunciation as a basic research that will be the theoretical foundation for the practical method of teaching Korean pronunciation. For this, perception and production test on segment and phonological process words were performed for 47 Chinese learners. And correlation analysis was performed by using SPSS 23 to see if there is a correlation between perception and production of learners in terms of individual learners and word itself. The results are summarized as follows. First, in terms of the individual learners, there is a statistically significant correlation between perception and production of pronunciation in both segmentation and phonological process word. However, there was a difference in the degree of correlation. To be specific, it was ‘very high’ (R = 0.900) in the segment, whereas ‘normal’ (R = 0.466) in the phonological process word. In terms of the individual words, there was also a statistically significant correlation between the perception and the production of pronunciation. However, in the degree of the correlation, both the segment and phonological process word showed low correlation. There were many cases in which the success of the perception did not lead to the success of the production, or the success of the production did not lead to the success of the perception. These experimental results imply that educational approach and method towards segment sound and the phonological process sound should be different. In addition, the ‘gap’ between perception and production of pronunciation means that there are influences of other variables besides perception and producing pronunciation. Furthermore, It means that there is a need for more intentional and explicit instructional methods other than direct and imitative simple repetition exercises such as simply ‘listening and repeating’.
