국문 초록

이 글에서는 한국 정치에서 안보와 포퓰리즘이 어떤 관련성 하에서 작동하며, 그 결과가 민주주의에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴본다. 많은 연구에도 불구하고 논쟁의 영역으로 남아 있는 포퓰리즘의 개념을 담론적 접근과 정치전략적 접근을 수용하여 다양한 원인으로 발생하는 혼란의 상황에서 위기의식을 갖는 정치행위자에 의해 이루어지는 정치참여 양식으로 제시했다. 이를 바탕으로 포퓰리즘과 민주주의, 안보정치와 포퓰리즘에 관한 이론적 논의를 진행한다. 한국 정치에서 나타나는 안보와 포퓰리즘, 그리고 민주주의의 관계를 정치과정 차원에서 그 특성을 살펴보고, 정치 양극화의 완화와 민주주의 발전을 위한 제언을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This article explores the interplay between security and populism in Korean politics and assesses its impact on democracy. Despite numerous studies, the concept of populism remains a contentious subject, and here it is defined as a mode of political engagement by actors who perceive a sense of crisis amidst confusion resulting from various factors, employing both discursive and strategic political approaches. Drawing from this definition, the article delves into theoretical discussions on populism, democracy, security politics, and populism. It examines the relationship between security, populism, and democracy within the realm of the political process in Korean politics, while also offering recommen- dations for the easing of political polarization and the advancement of democracy.
