The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent the difficulty level of phonological rules, phonological acquisition, recognition of phonological rules and vocabulary familiarity correlate with the acquisition of phonological rules for Korean language learners. A total of 24 subjects, comprised equally of Japanese and Taiwanese learners (6 beginner and 6 intermediate learners for each nationality), were used in the study. The subjects were asked to read 58 sentences containing vocabulary that required learners to apply phonological rules, as well as vocabulary that is in the same phonological environment as the pronounced form after phonological rules are applied. Lastly, the correlation between the recognition of phonological rules and the application of those rules was studied through a recognition experiment. The results of the experiment suggest that both the difficulty level of phonological rules and vocabulary familiarity have a high correlation with phonological rule acquisition, while phonological acquisition and the recognition of phonological rules show little correlation to phonological rule acquisition, in the process of non-native speakers acquiring Korean phonological rules.
