영문 초록

The recognition of Joseon by Chinese intellectuals is believed to be a base of establishment of relationship between Joseon and China. Identifying the matter of recognition historically naturally has a limit. Recognition is a matter of mind. So, it is suggested that speculating the recognition of Joseon of Chinese intellectuals through literature is an urgent and significant task. The first thing to be considered in this study is to speculate traditional view of Joseon by Chinese intellectuals. However, this study focuses on how Joseon was described in Chinese literature from the Sino-Japanese War to a heroic deed by Ahn Jung-geun. The traditional view of Joseon by the intellectuals was based on the suggestion that Joseon was a country of naive feudal lords as shown in several Chinese literary works. However, such recognition was changing through the Sino-Japanese War. The change was not confined to only the change in recognition of Korea. Through the war, Chinese intellectuals had new recognition on the world and lost their superior status they had have over the East Asia. They worried about new establishment of East Asian order based on distress, self-accusation and changed recognition. This study shows that their complicated mind is well described in ꡔGabo-jungil-junjang-mun-hak-jibꡕ. In particular, this study focuses on the view of Joseon by Chinese intellectuals. It was demonstrated that Joseon was rapidly lifted to equal position with China after the heroic deed by Ahn Jung-geun. Chinese intellectuals waited heroes to encourage them to overcome the turbulent days when there was a heroic deed by Mr. Ahn. They compared him to Yeyang or Jang Ryang. Their recognition of Mr. Ahn led to changed recognition of the entire Joseon beyond a personal recognition.
