The main purpose of this study was to explore the effects of elementary English learners’ everyday picture book reading focusing on vocabulary learning and its application. Twenty-eight fourth graders participated in the study. Diverse data, such as students’ pre- and post-vocabulary tests, pre- and post-surveys, worksheets, students’ and teacher’s journals, interviews and recording of class activities were collected. Students’ pre- and post-vocabulary tests were analyzed quantitatively and the other data were analyzed qualitatively. This study revealed two major results. First, daily 10-minute picture book reading activities contributed to children’s self-directed English reading by forming reading habits and extending the reading environment out of the classroom. As a result of the pre- and post-vocabulary tests, it was found that the vocabulary of these children improved at all levels and the post-reading activity of making picture dictionaries gave the children the opportunity to use the vocabulary they learned. Second, the participating children showed various patterns of vocabulary uses through vocabulary activities after reading. In other words, when the children made picture dictionaries, they reflected their English levels or tastes and made many works at the level of pictures, words, or sentences. Based on the results, implications are suggested.
