국문 초록

과학자도 언어를 통해 생각하고 소통한다. 다만 과학의 언어에는 과학적 전문용어가 많고, 낯선 기호언어를 많이 사용한다는 특징이 있을 뿐이다. 과학자들의 언어가 지나칠 정도로 압축적으로 보일 수도 있다. 그렇다고 과학자들이 언어적 표현을 소홀히 여기는 것은 아니다. 과학자들도 자신의 과학적 생각을 정확하게 표현하기 위해 최선을 다한다. 우리 과학자의 언어 현실은 심각한 수준이다. ‘문과’와 ‘이과’로 구분된 교육과 영어에 대한 지나친 관심이 우리 과학자의 언어를 크게 오염시키고 있다. 잘못된 과학 교육이 과학자의 언어는 물론이고 우리의 일상 언어에도 나쁜 영향을 주고 있다. ‘민주화된 과학기술 시대’를 위한 언어 교육을 위해 문과-이과의 구분을 철폐하고, 17세기 근대과학혁명과 함께 등장한 ‘과학정신’과 현대 과학을 기반으로 하는 우주관, 자연관, 생명관, 문명관을 비롯한 세계관에 대한 텍스트를 포함시켜야만 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of language which is the most important tool for thinking and communication in science. Scientists’ language may appear to be different only because their words are full of unfamiliar scientific terms and various symbolic languages. Scientists may seem to prefer overly compressed expressions, Nevertheless they have sincere interests in their use of language and they in general do their best to express their scientific thinking in accurate fashion. Unfortunately, language of Korean scientists is seriously corrupted due to the unreasonable distinction between ‘science’ and ‘humanity’ in secondary education, and excessive emphasis on English. Inefficient science education may also affect the language of Korean scientists as well as our daily language practice. In order to improve language education for ‘democratic society based on science and technology’, we need to remove the barrier between science and humanity in secondary and college education. The ‘science spirit’ and the modern scientific world views, including views on cosmos, nature, life and civilization, must be emphasized in our educational texts.
