Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel Kilmeny of the Orchard teaches two aspects of the love language to those who want to learn love. One is the narrative language of achieving the end of a lover overcoming various difficulties and completing love. The other is the poetic language of emotion in which lovers interact with each other every moment.
In the narrative structure, the novel emphasizes the position of a passive woman who is cared for at the end of marriage to an outstanding man because of her beautiful appearance enough to fascinate all adults and the resolution of her ability to speak, which was recognized as a lack of only one. However, the novel emphasizes the delicate dialogue between the two people, since all relationships are formed around the female character who cannot speak. The reason why the lover’s conversation can be poetic is that it is difficult to express the emotion that occurs in the mutual relationship in words, and it depends on poetry or music.
Learning love is simply an attempt to look critically at yourself, who has become accustomed to the language of achieving purpose in anticipation of the completion of love, and to communicate with the emotion of love that can never be conveyed in the language I have known by mobilizing all the verbal, para-verbal, and non-verbal elements.
