This study analyses the investment efficiency and efficiency changes of fourteen Korean container lines from 2019 to 2021 using DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) and MPI(Malmquist Productivity Index). According to DEA results, the investment efficiency of large-sized shipping lines is in the DRS(Decreasing Return to Scale) while that of small and medium-sized shipping lines is in the IRS(Increasing Return to Scale) status. In other words, the growth rate of sales for large-sized companies is lower than that of tangible assets and liabilities. On the other hand, the small and medium-sized companies are generating high sales compared to their tangible assets and liabilities. The MPI results denote that the productivity of Korean shipping lines increased from 2019 to 2021, mainly contributed by TCI(Technical Change Index) but not by TECI(Technical Efficiency Change Index). In particular, large-sized companies showed low productivity in PECI(Pure Efficiency Change Index) but low productivity in SECI(Scale Efficiency Change Index) of less than 1 for small and medium-sized ones. This result suggests that large-sized companies need an efficient management strategy of their resources, and small and medium-sized ones need a solution to secure economies of scale through either fleet acquisition or strategic alliances with other shipping lines.
