국문 초록

엘리엇은 『시의 효용과 비평의 효용』에서 “어떤 세대도 다른 세대가 했던 것과 똑같은 방식으로 예술에 관심을 두지는 않는다. 각각의 세대는, 각각의 개인이 그러한 것처럼, 예술을 감식하는 자신만의 범주를 통해서 예술에 대하여 심사숙고를 하고, 예술에 대하여 자신의 세대에게 [적합한] 요구를 하고, 예술을 위해 자신의 세대에 적합하게 예술을 사용한다.”고 주장하였다. 그는 “아름다움”이라는 미학적 범주나 요구는 19세기말의 심미주의에 적합한 미학적인 범주나 요구였으므로, 현대라는 새로운 시대는 새로운 범주나 기준을 찾아내고 이를 실현시키는 것이 현대 예술가와 현대 비평가가 해야 한다고 생각했다. 그가 시를 짓거나 비평을 할 때, 자신과 시대에 맞는 새로운 기준을 모색하고자 했다는 맥락에서, 이 글의 목표는 그가 심미주의 미학의 핵심 개념인 “아름다움”을 거부하였던 이유를 구체적으로 밝히고, 현대에 적합한 새로운 미학적인 범주나 기준으로 채택한 것들이 무엇인지 구체적으로 살펴보는 것과 이 새로운 범주와 기준의 의미와 의의를 살펴보는 것이다.

영문 초록

In The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism, T. S. Eliot insisted that each generation, like each individual, should bring to the contemplation of art its own categories of appreciation, make its own demands upon art, and have its own uses for art. Although “beauty” has been persistently one of the primary aesthetic principles, especially in Aestheticism at the fin-de-siècle, he refused to accept it as a valid and substantial criterion for modern poetry and argued that modern poetry should have new aesthetic principles and categories different from those of the preceding period. On the basis of such a contention of Eliot’s, this paper aims to investigate the main reason he rejected “beauty” for modern poetry, to illustrate new aesthetic principles and criteria he adopted for modern poetry and criticism, and also to illuminate their meaning and significance.
