네 사중주에 나타난 “시작”과 “끝”에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

본 글은 기독교 시각에서 엘리엇의 네 사중주를 고찰했다. 특히 인간의 삶을 ‘시작’과 ‘끝’이라는 관점에서 고찰한 것으로서 엘리엇은 네 사중주에서 이 문제를 표현하고 있다. 기독교 시각에서 보면 ‘시작’은 곧 우리의 인생이 끝을 향해서 가지만 이 끝 또한 또 다른 시작이 될 수 있다는 것이다. 그래서 엘리엇은 “나의 시작에 나의 끝이 있다” 혹은 “나의 끝은 나의 시작에 있다” 등으로 표현한다. 그러나 여기서 “나의 끝에 나의 시작이 있다”는 논리는 기독교적으로 ‘영생’을 함축한다고 볼 수 있다. 아쉽게도 인간은 이와 같은 논리를 외면하기 때문에 변함에 노출되기 쉽고 또한 변하는 것에 집착을 보이게 된다. 엘리엇 역시 이 모습을 네 사중주에서 그대로 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to investigate the meaning and significance of beginning and ending depicted in Eliot’s Four Quartets. As religious poems Four Quartets shows, our life has a beginning and ending. Eliot also expresses it as “In my beginning is my end” and “In my end is my beginning”. But the Christian doctrine teaches a different ending: in it the ‘beginning’ means ‘physical death’ and the ‘ending’ is actually a new start after death, which implies an eternal life. Eliot illuminates the relation between God and humans. So, if humans follow God’s will, they could get an eternal life. But they ignore this principle, so that they face constant changes and death; through their life they have ‘attachment’ and selfish greed. Eliot asks us to keep ‘detachment’ and receive God as the First Mover. If then, humans would exist in a timeless moment. Harmonizing with God and His will, man could meet God and enjoy eternal life.
