국문 초록

본 논문은 생산의 국제적 분할이론에 입각하여 최종재화의 무역보다 빠르게 비중이 커가고 있는 동아시아의 부품 무역을 EU경제권과 비교 분석한다. 이를 위해 수정된 O-Ring생산함수를 이용한다. O-Ring생산함수를 이용함으로서 각 국가별로 분산되어 이루어지고 있는 생산 과정간 상호보완 관계를 고려할 수 있다. 생산의 국제적 분할이론에서 외생적으로 취급되었던 서비스 링크비용개념을 내생화시킬 수 있음으로서 부품무역을 보다 체계적으로 분석할 수 있다. O-Ring생산함수를 이용하여 도출된 수출방정식을 추정하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 기존 연구와 달리 동아시아의 부품수출은 수출국뿐만이 아니라 수출상대국의 물가수준, 인적자본, 인프라 그리고 정부규제가 수출국의 경우와 같은 방향으로 영향을 미치고 있다. 둘째, 동아시아의 생산 과정은 인적자본에 의해 보완관계가 유지. 확대되는데 비해 EU의 생산 과정은 정보통신 및 운송 인프라와 정부규제에 의해 보완관계가 유지되는 대조를 보이고 있다. 셋째, 동아시아의 생산과정상의 보완관계는 전반적으로 강화되는 추세를 보이고 있으며, 이러한 보완관계는 중국과 일본에 의해 형성된 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the role of international fragmentation of production in enhancing the complementarity between production processes in East Asia. To analyze the extent of international fragmentation and the trade in parts and components, this paper modifies and applies the O-Ring theory of production presented in Kremer (1993), which emphasizes that the production network between processes is more important than the quantities of production factors. Using aggregated international trade data, patterns of international trade in East Asia and Europe, particularly trade in parts and components, are carefully examined using export equation derived from revised O-Ring production function is applied to check the validity of the theoretical framework. The results of our analysis are consistent with our claim that important elements of fragmentation theory, such as differences in factors such as human capital, infrastructure and quality of government regulation that might affect a probability to perform tasks perfectly, play a significant roles in determining the magnitude of trade in parts and components in East Asia. In addition, changes in coefficients for those factors suggest substantial development in the characteristics of international production/distribution networks in East Asia. Our analytical approach of contrasting East Asia with Europe allows us to differentiate among alternative motivations for trade in parts and components in the two regions.
