An Investigation of English Major Students’ Language Learning Anxiety

The factors causing language anxiety by English major university students at a women’s university were investigated using Horwitz’s Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). In addition, this study identified whether students’ anxiety levels were significantly varied in regarding the year in college and lengths of studying English. The FLCAS questionnaire was used to attain data from 46 students, 5 of whom further volunteered to participate in interviews conducted during the fall semester of 2021. The students’ responses to the questionnaire were analyzed utilizing SPSS 26. The findings manifested that the most anxiety-provoking factors among participants were their apprehension of 1) being called on by professor, 2) thinking that the other students are better at English, 3) a professor asking questions that are not prepared in advanced, 4) speaking English in front of other students, 5) speaking English without preparation, and 6) the consequences of failing English class. In addition, a one-way ANOVA was utilized to analyze the responses. In terms of year in college and lengths of studying English, the ANOVA test revealed that there was no significant difference.
