This study investigates various ways of translating the verb «want» in Russian (verb хотеть, хотеться, and expressions хотел бы, хотелось бы) into Korean. Inherent in such verbs are certain semanteme and if we were to translate them into Korean, it could be expressed as «simply wanting, desiring». However, these are insufficient in conveying the totality of the correct meaning inherent in the Russian verbs. This study therefore focuses on this and investigates it. Inherent in the meaning of the verb Хотеться are not only the physical desires (for example, I want to sleep, I want to cry or I want to eat hot soup: хочется спать, плакать, выпить горячего бульона) but also the mental (for example, I want to stand on stage: хочется выступать на сцене). Also, hidden is the meaning of «the speaker s free will, and having such desires, but without being able to do anything about them.» There exists no Korean verb that has such semanteme to convey such meanings. Therefore, it is necessary to use supplementary vocabulary and grammatical methods to convey such meaning. Depending on the context, the following supplementary words are necessary. For example, adverbs such as desperately, really, in truth or descriptive methods are necessary. For example, I understand that this is of course a separate issue from your efforts. However, what are the personality traints you want your children to have? In the meaning of the expressions хотел бы, хотелось бы, the following are inherent if to explain. (I want to stand on stage, but I am not tall enough and my voice is not good enough. Я хотел бы выступать на сцене, но у меня нет ни роста, ни голоса) In other words, «The performance of the hoper does not depend on the speaker who hopes. Therefore, the speaker is passive. The speaker cannot do it or does not want, but it is active in reaching the objectives of the hoper.» Such semanteme cannot be found in Korean verbs. Therefore, such expressions are made with supplementary vocabulary and grammatical methods. When translating, it is important to consider the context before and after: In many contexts, the subject of хотел бы (when the hoper wants something regardless of one s will) conveys passivity. When used to directly make an appeal to ask something to the person conversing with, this expression is a polite way of asking. But in some contexts, the expressions хотел бы, хотелось бы and verbs хотеть, хотеться are used as a motion.
