영문 초록

Ščerba suggested a theoretical framework which a number of linguists have considered as a start for theoretical lexicography. His paper, ‘About the general theory of lexicography’ is one of the classics in the field of lexicography. The paper dealt with not only the pure lexicographic issues, but also the questions of standard language, standardization of language, language pedagogy, and semantic change. Ščerba, especially, has performed an extensive attempt to categorize dictionaries by their types. His papers have become a theoretical starting point in the modern lexicography by discussing important issues in compiling dictionaries. As mentioned in the current research, the most crucial characteristics of European dictionaries in the 20th century were explained in detail by Ščerba, and his idea still sheds light on the modern lexicography.
