국문 초록

영국의 도예가 질리언 론데스는 1970년대 태동한 포스트모더니즘의 흐름을 매우 급진적인 방식으로 도자예술에 적용한 선구적인 작가이다. 오늘날 도예계에서 다양하게 시도되는 혼합매체의 활용을 론데스의 1980~1990년대 작품에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 하지만 작가가 사용한 수많은 소재와 그 적용방식이 당시에는 다소 난해하게 인식되어 주류에는 편승하지 못했다. 아프리카 미술로부터 비롯된 혁신적인 소재의 사용과 점토의 한계를 규정짓지 않은 작가의 용감한 태도는 오늘날의 창조적 도예표현에 본보기가 되었다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 그동안 국내에는 알려지지 않았던 작가의 작품을 소개하는 것이 의미 있다는 판단에서 본 연구는 시작되었다. 이에 연구자는 론데스의 혼합매체를 활용한 작품들을 중심으로 분석하였으며, 이를 크게 프레스 몰드기법으로 제작된 작품과 가연성 소재, 그리고 기성품을 함께 번조한 방식으로 나누어 형식분류를 진행하였다. 프레스 몰드기법은 혼합매체를 질료로 사용한 작품과는 매체 적용 방식의 차이가 있으나, 물질을 함께 번조하는 작업의 중요한 시작점으로 작용하였기 때문에 본 논문에서 함께 다루게 되었다. 본 연구는 시기와 장소에 따라 작품을 분석한 기존 연구와 달리 소재와 적용방식의 발생 관계를 입체적으로 살펴봄으로써 기존 연구의 한계를 극복하는데 그 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

British ceramist Gillian Lowndes is a pioneering artist who applied the post-modernism to ceramic art in a very radical way in the 1970s. The application of mixed media, which has been tried and widely used in the ceramics scene today, can be seen in Lowndes’s works from the 1980s and 1990s. However, her achieve with variety materials and applications were recognized as enigmatic at the time, so it could not get in the mainstream. Today, Lowndes s brave attitude by using innovative materials and clay influenced on African arts can be seen as a model for creative ceramic expression. Therefore, the research began with the judgment that it was meaningful to introduce the works of artists that had not been known in Korea. Thus, I analyzed the works using Lowndes mixed media in more detail and divided them into mold pressing techniques, combustible materials, and ready-made products. The press molding technique differs from the work using the mixed medium as a material in the media application method, but I decided to contain it in this research because it served as an important starting point for firing materials together. It tried to overcome the limitations of existing research by looking at the multifaceted approach between materials and application methods that could not be accessed in the classification of past studies by era and location.
