국문 초록

본 연구는 캐나다에 살고 있는 한국계 1.5세대 청년의 삶을 이해하기 위하여 그가 위치한 사회문화적 맥락에서 언어와 관련하여 어떠한 이야기를 살아내는지를 내러티브 연구방법을 사용하여 탐구하였다. 탐구를 통하여 연구참여자가 자라 온 시간 맥락, 처한 사회문화적 맥락, 그리고물리적으로 존재했던 장소 맥락에 따라 얼마나 역동적이고 다중적이며 유동적이고 복잡한 언어정체성 이야기를 살아내는지를 발견할 수 있었다. 연구참여자가 언어 관련하여 살아낸 이야기의 의미적 구성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사는 국가에 따라 영어의 의미가 달라졌다. 둘째, 나이가 어릴수록 영어능력부족에 대한 자의식이 발동되지 않는다. 셋째, 사회문화적 차이의 발견은 ‘말 없는 조용한 아이’로 살게 하였다. 넷째, 사회문화적 배경의 공유감은 본래적 성격의 회복과 친한친구관계성을 생성하였다. 다섯째, 학문적 판(academic field)에서는 언어적 열등감이 사라졌다. 여섯째, Career 정체성의 형성은 캐나다 사회의 일원이 됨을 의미하였다. 본 연구가 좀 더 커다란 범주의 1.5세대 청년들의 삶에 대한 독자들의 통찰적이고 확장적인 이해와 공감에 도움이 되기를 희망한다

영문 초록

This study explored how 1.5 generation of Korean-immigrant youth has been living with her stories on language identity, in sociocultural contexts she is located in, to understand her lived experiences. The research adopted Narrative Inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000) research methodology for the purpose. The study showed how dynamic, multi-layered, fluid, and complicated language-identity stories she has been living with, depending on temporal context she lived in, on sociocultural context she was located to, and on physical places she existed in. Meaning-construction of her language-related stories is as follows: First, meaning of English changed, depending on which country she lived in. Second, the younger she was, the less self-conscious she was about her lack of English competence. Third, she used to be a ‘quiet girl’ since she had realized the sociocultural difference from the white peers. Fourth, sharing sociocultural background with Korean friends helped her restore her original active personality and build very closed bond with them. Fifth, the linguistic inferiority was gone in her academic major field. Sixth, formation of career-identity meant joining the Canadian society as a legitimate member. The researcher hope that the study can help readers have more insightful and expanded understanding and empathy for I.5 generation of Korea youth living in other countries.
