Nursing Students’ Perceptions of Their ESP Needs: A Case of X University

목적 본 연구는 X대학의 간호전공 대학생들의 특수목적영어 교과목 개발의 가능성을 알아보기 위해 간호 전공 학생들의 영어교육에 대한 요구를 분석하고자 한다. 방법 X대학 선택 교양 영어 교과목에 간호 전공 학생들의 저조한 등록률에 대한 방안을 마련하기 위해, 간호 전공 학생들을 위한 특수목적영어에 대한 요구를 조사하였다. 본 연구는 X대학의 233명의 간호전공학생들을 대상으로 요구분석 설문조사를 실시하였고, 이를 통해 학생들의 현 교양영어에 대한 만족도와 특수목적영어에 대한 요구를 알아보았다. 요구분석 설문조사는 특수목적영어에 대한 요구 이외에도 학생들이 선호하는 교수언어에 대해서도 조사하였다. 결과 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 학생들은 현재 교양영어에 대해 다소 긍정적인 만족도를 보였다. 간호 전공 학생들을 위한 특수목적영어 교과목에 대한 요구와 그러한 교과목이 열렸을 때 수강할 의향에 대해서 물었을 때, 학생들은 매우 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 학생 특성 중 영어에 대한 관심이 특수목적영어에 대한 필요성, 특수목적영어 수업의 수강의지, 원어민 강사필요성과 수업에서 영어의 사용 비율과 유의한 관계를 보였다. 결론 학생들은 특수목적영어 교과목을 통해 그들의 구두 의사소통능력을 향상시켜 다각적인 업무 현장의 요구에 충족하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 간호학생들을 위한 특수목적영어 교과목 개발을 위한 교육적 활용 방안을 제안한다.

영문 초록

Objectives The current study investigates the English instructional needs of nursing students at X University to guide the potential development of nursing English for Special Purposes (ESP) course. Methods Due to the low enrollment of elective general English courses among nursing students at X University, the study was conducted to examined the needs for a more specialized nursing ESP curriculum. A needs analysis questionnaire was conducted to 233 nursing students at X university in order to find out their satisfaction level of the current general English curriculum and the students’ perceived needs for nursing ESP. The questionnaire also asked students to identify their preferred medium of instruction for a potential nursing ESP course. Results The findings from the showed that students had a moderately positive satisfactory level toward the current general English course. With regard to their perceptions on the need for nursing ESP and their willingness to enroll in such courses, students showed a high level of need for nursing ESP as well as a high willingness to take nursing ESP courses if offered. Students’ interest in English showed statistically significant relationship with their perceived need for ESP, intent to take ESP, need for native English-speaking teachers, and the amount of English used in instruction. Conclusions The students wanted to enhance their oral communication abilities from nursing ESP in order to meet the diversified needs of the current workplace. Based on the findings of the study, implications for developing nursing ESP courses are offered.
