국문 초록

이 연구는 박완서 소설 「배반(背叛)의 여름」 에 나타나는 기만적 서술과 위선적 행위, 개인의 정체성 정립 과정을 연구하는데 목적이 있다. 박완서는 보이는 것, 즉 개인이 인식하는 모든 사물과 사회현상을 한 개인의 감정과 이성이 만들어가는 정체성과연계하여 서술하고 허위와 기만이 불안한 자아를 형성시키고 격렬한 내면의 혼란과고통을 발생시키는 것을 보여주고자 하였다. 유년기의 ‘나’에게 보여진 아버지의 모습과 전구라의 위선적 행위는 외형적 표현들을 중시하여 기만하고 기만당하는 위선적이고 모순적인 사회구조의 단면들을 제시하고 있다. 소설 속의 이러한 부정적인 시각은 인간 사회의 불가피한 사항이며, 불합리한 사회에서 살아가는 수많은 현대인들이 극복해 나가야하는 과제이다.

영문 초록

This study investigates deception, hypocritical behavior, and the process of establishing individual identity in Park Wan-seo’s novel Summer of Betrayal. Park Wan-seo describes all perceived objects and social phenomena in connection with a character’s emotions and reasoning to show that falsehood and deceit cause an insecure self with violent inner confusion and pain. The father’s appearance shown to me in childhood and the hypocritical behavior of Jeon Gu-ra suggest aspects of a hypocritical, contradictory, and deceptive social structure, which manifest with an emphasis on external expressions. The novel’s negative view depicts an inevitable part of human society that must be overcome by modern people living in an unreasonable society.
